Read the international application guide →OrthoFellow compares 2652 orthopaedic fellowship programmes across 82 countries and multi-country networks, from US orthopedic fellowships to clinical, research and observership pathways in Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Use the answers below to choose the right fellowship type, then browse by subspecialty or country.
An orthopaedic fellowship is subspecialty training taken after orthopaedic surgery residency or equivalent specialist training. It focuses on one area, such as spine, sports medicine, hip and knee arthroplasty, trauma, hand, foot and ankle, shoulder and elbow, paediatric orthopaedics or orthopaedic oncology. Formats range from employed clinical posts with supervised operative responsibility to research fellowships and short observerships.
Yes. "Orthopedic" is the usual American spelling and "orthopaedic" the British and Commonwealth spelling; both describe the same post-residency training. OrthoFellow lists programmes under either spelling, including US orthopedic fellowships and international orthopaedic fellowships.
Most clinical orthopaedic fellowships last 12 months, and US ACGME-accredited fellowships are typically one year. Internationally, clinical fellowships commonly run from 6 to 24 months, research fellowships often run one to two years, and observerships may last only a few weeks. Each programme profile on OrthoFellow shows the published duration where the host states it.
In the United States, many orthopedic fellowships recruit through a central match, such as the SF Match for several subspecialties or the NRMP Hand Surgery Match, usually 12 to 24 months before the start date. Outside the US, most orthopaedic fellowships are applied for directly with the host hospital, university or society. Always confirm the current cycle on the official programme page.
Often, but eligibility depends on the host country's medical registration rules, language requirements, visa route and whether the role is hands-on or observational. OrthoFellow shows published international eligibility, registration and language requirements on each programme profile and keeps unpublished facts marked as unknown.
Some are salaried or come with a stipend, while others are self-funded or charge fees. In the OrthoFellow directory, 1524 of 2652 programme profiles currently publish salary, stipend or other funding support; the rest are self-funded or do not publish funding details.
