Orthopaedic oncology fellowship applications
Orthopaedic oncology, orthopedic oncology and musculoskeletal oncology describe overlapping surgical training searches. The useful distinction is the actual appointment: adult or paediatric populations, bone or soft-tissue tumours, clinical responsibility, reconstruction and research. Start with that scope, then choose the application route supported by the programme.
Educational guidance, not legal, immigration, licensing or admissions advice.Define the clinical and academic scope
Compare bone and soft-tissue tumour care, sarcoma, metastatic disease, limb salvage, reconstruction and multidisciplinary planning. Ask how pathology, imaging, medical oncology and radiation oncology teaching connect to the fellow's work. These are comparison questions, not a claim that every programme includes every component. For research posts, establish the project, methods, supervisor and expected outputs separately from clinical access.
Distinguish MSTS recognition from accreditation
MSTS describes recognition through an ACGME pathway and a separate route for programmes without ACGME accreditation. Check the named programme's current record; recognition alone does not establish accreditation, funding, eligibility or an open position. Preserve the precise terminology used by the responsible body.
Match cycle and training year are different
The MSTS 2027 match timeline closes applications on 16 November 2026 and identifies August 2028 as the training start. These dates apply to the published match cycle, not automatically to every oncology research or paediatric post. Reopen the timeline and the individual programme instructions before applying, and resolve any different host cutoff directly.
Check direct applications separately
A dedicated paediatric oncology appointment or a sarcoma research placement may use direct contact rather than the shared match. Follow its stated route. Do not assign a match deadline to a programme merely because its specialty is oncology. Keep advertised availability, historical cycles and next dates not published distinct.
Use a short evidence table for the final decision
For each programme, note what is confirmed, which source supports it and what remains unanswered. Compare your required outcome with the fellow's permitted role and case allocation rather than a centre's reputation or total volume. Request written appointment terms before committing travel or registration costs.
- Adult, paediatric or mixed population and operative scope
- Training prerequisites and international qualifications
- Research time, supervision and assessment
- Intake year, matching service or direct application
- Funding, fees, registration and immigration requirements
Sources checked and applicant checklist
MSTS establishes its published recognition routes and cycle timeline. Curriculum and application comparisons are editorial questions. Match milestones are not copied to unrelated appointments.
Before you act
- Define population, curriculum and permitted role.
- Verify the exact recognition or accreditation claim.
- Separate match year from the training year.
- Use the host's direct route for appointments outside the match.

Frequently asked questions
Should I search orthopaedic and musculoskeletal oncology separately?
Use the terms to discover official programmes, then deduplicate the actual appointments. OrthoFellow uses one global oncology hub while preserving programme-specific scope.
Does every oncology fellowship use SF Match?
No. Confirm the host's route and match participation; research and focused appointments can have different recruitment processes.
