APPLICANT GUIDE

How to use the China orthopaedic fellowship directory

For mainland China, first establish whether you are applying to a hospital department, a university training programme or a society-selected host placement. An international host relationship can support an educational visit without providing a current vacancy, salary or permission to operate.

Application approach

Beijing combines sports-medicine and international-network routes; Shanghai includes knee and shoulder training alongside trauma-host evidence. More focused city listings may contain a single society host, which is useful for locating expertise but should not be read as a broad choice of open posts.

China's official guidance requires authorisation for foreign physicians undertaking clinical diagnosis or treatment. Shanghai's application guide describes a temporary medical-practice licence with host-institution documentation and translated credentials. Ask the receiving hospital which steps apply to your nationality, intended duties and stay; a fellowship acceptance letter alone is insufficient.

  • Confirm the hospital, department, campus and named training supervisor before submitting documents.
  • Separate observation, laboratory or clinical research, supervised training and direct patient-care duties in the proposed learning plan.
  • Ask the host about Mandarin or other working-language expectations and the language used during clinics and teaching.
  • For clinical work, confirm medical-practice authorisation with the host and competent authority, alongside visa or residence requirements.
  • Use the current society call or university-hospital application page for eligibility and timing; a host-centre entry is not an open invitation.
  • Request written confirmation of tuition, stipend, accommodation, insurance and responsibility for registration expenses.

Deadlines and documents

Mainland China opportunities use society-call calendars or host-specific arrangements. No national application deadline is inferred, and an expired international-network call does not become rolling admission.

Common documents include current cv with operative, research and teaching experience, motivation statement explaining subspecialty goals and host fit, medical degree, orthopaedic training certificate and board or college evidence where required, two or three references, often including a programme director or current head of department, passport, registration, visa or occupational-health documents when the hospital requires them, host invitation, medical-licence and degree evidence, translations and medical-practice authorisation documents where the competent authority requires them.

Language, registration and visa

Confirm the working language with the department. Foreign physicians performing diagnosis or treatment need the applicable medical-practice authorisation; observation or research permissions must be clarified separately. Registration rules for Hong Kong or Taiwan should not be substituted for mainland requirements.

Hospital support and society grants must be checked per programme. Missing salary or accommodation data remains unpublished, and a grant should not be treated as full living-cost coverage.

PLANNING QUESTIONS

Applying for orthopaedic training in China

What orthopaedic training programmes are listed in China?

OrthoFellow currently indexes 15 current canonical pathways in China: 2 clinical fellowships, 0 research fellowships, 13 observerships and 0 short courses. Open each profile for its exact classification and current cycle status.

Are international surgeons eligible for every programme in China?

No. Eligibility, language, registration, immigration permission and hospital privileges depend on the specific programme and host. OrthoFellow shows published requirements and labels missing information for direct confirmation.

How current are the China listings?

Each programme profile shows its own checked date and official source. Availability and deadlines can change, so applicants should reopen the current official programme page before applying or paying costs.

Does this China page include Hong Kong or Taiwan programmes?

This page covers the directory's mainland China records. Hong Kong and Taiwan remain separate destination categories with their own institutions and applicant guidance; no eligibility rule is transferred between them.

Are mainland China fellowships taught in English?

The source or host must confirm this. An English-language website or international society listing does not establish the language used in patient care, operating theatres or teaching.

Does a China fellowship acceptance allow clinical practice?

No. Confirm the applicable medical-practice authorisation, host credentialing and immigration arrangements before undertaking clinical duties.

Can I apply directly to every AO host in China?

A host profile and a fellowship application route are different. Follow the society's selection process where required, then confirm the placement with the host.

What documents do applicants usually prepare for China?

Common documents include current cv with operative, research and teaching experience, motivation statement explaining subspecialty goals and host fit, medical degree, orthopaedic training certificate and board or college evidence where required, two or three references, often including a programme director or current head of department, passport, registration, visa or occupational-health documents when the hospital requires them, host invitation, medical-licence and degree evidence, translations and medical-practice authorisation documents where the competent authority requires them. Programme profiles may require additional documents, so applicants should use the official source as the final checklist.
